Most people never ask themselves the one question that matters most:

What edge do I have—or could I develop?

Not a vague hope. Not a busy calendar. A real, defensible edge.

It might be:

· Patience in an impatient market

· Deep industry expertise others overlook

· Willingness to look in hated, ignored markets

Your investment philosophy—and honestly, your career strategy—should be built entirely around exploiting that edge.

If you genuinely have no edge, that’s fine too.

Your honest philosophy might simply be:

“I don’t have an edge, so I’ll index and focus on earning more income.”

That’s not surrender. That’s self-awareness.

But the bottom line is brutal and simple:

You need an edge.

If you don’t have one, either find one or don’t play the game.

Who you follow matters more than you think

Here’s the part people skip:

Take a strong look at your heroes.

You naturally move toward the people you idolize.

Admire people with poor philosophies? Yours will be equally poor.

Choose the right heroes.

And don’t just copy their checklist of beliefs—understand why they believe what they do.

From my own experience:

But the real work was in reading his memos and learning deeply how he thinks. Not just the conclusions. The wiring behind them.

Once you internalize the why, it stops being borrowed and starts becoming yours.

Over the years, I've found my own edge in staying disciplined when markets get emotional—and in looking closely at spaces others have left for dead. That didn’t come from hero worship. It came from understanding why my heroes made their moves, then adapting those principles to my own reality.

A simple litmus test for yourself

Ask these three questions today:

1. What is my actual edge right now? (Be specific.)

2. Who are my top three heroes—and are they helping or hurting my thinking?

3. Am I playing a game I shouldn't be in?

Because the goal isn't to be busy.

It's to play where you have an edge, with people worth copying.

Now your turn: What's one edge you've quietly developed over the past few years?
