Check if a stock advisor is SEBI registered.

Anyone giving stock recommendations in India for a fee must be registered with SEBI as a Research Analyst or an Investment Adviser. Registration numbers begin with INH for Research Analysts and INA for Investment Advisers. If someone charging for calls has no such number, they are not registered.

Free, no sign-up. Checks are run against veri5, which mirrors SEBI's public Research Analyst and Investment Adviser registers.

How to read a SEBI registration number.

INH…Research Analyst. May publish buy/sell recommendations and research.
INA…Investment Adviser. May give personalised advice for a fee.
NeitherNot registered to charge for recommendations, whatever the profit screenshots say.

A registration number on its own proves nothing — it has to match the person using it. Check the number against the name on SEBI's intermediary register, and check that the registration is still valid rather than lapsed or suspended.

What registration does and does not mean.

Registration means SEBI has vetted the person's qualifications and holds them to a code of conduct, with a complaints route if something goes wrong. It does not mean their calls will make money.

SEBI is explicit about this, and so are we: registration granted by SEBI, membership of a SEBI-recognised supervisory body and certification from NISM in no way guarantee the performance of the intermediary or provide any assurance of returns to investors.

Signs the person is not registered.

If you have already lost money to an unregistered advisor, complaints go to SEBI SCORES, and disputes to SMART ODR.

Questions people ask.

Is it illegal to give stock tips without SEBI registration?

Giving recommendations for consideration without registering as a Research Analyst or Investment Adviser is a breach of SEBI's regulations. Sharing a personal opinion for free is different from running a paid tips service.

How do I check a SEBI registration number?

Search the number or the name on SEBI's intermediary register. Confirm the name matches the person contacting you and that the registration is current — a real number belonging to someone else is a common impersonation.

Does SEBI registration guarantee returns?

No. Registration is about conduct and accountability, not performance. Past performance does not indicate future results, and no registered professional may promise a return.
